Trump’s Conviction Ignites Political Firestorm – Even Trump Was Surprised by the Outcome

Liberals are celebrating the conviction of Donald Trump. Joe Biden is already leveraging this event to fuel his floundering re-election campaign. It comes as no surprise that Trump supporters are outraged. Interestingly, this verdict might actually galvanize more voters to rally behind him.

But how will establishment Republicans respond? These are the “moderate” Republicans who have spent years in the D.C. political arena. Some have opposed Trump in the past and might see this as an opportunity to criticize the former president further.

That doesn’t seem to be the case this time.

From Breitbart:
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), a moderate who has split with former President Donald Trump in the past, joined the ranks of his supporters Wednesday after the jury in the Manhattan business records trial returned a guilty verdict…

The district attorney, who campaigned on a promise to prosecute Trump, pursued these charges because of Trump’s identity rather than any specific criminal conduct. The political motivations behind this case blur the lines between the judicial system and the electoral process, and this verdict is likely to face a lengthy appeals process.

Moderate Republican Senator Susan Collins condemned the conviction against Trump. She stated that the American justice system should prosecute cases based on “alleged criminal conduct” regardless of the defendant’s identity. However, she asserted that in this instance, “the opposite has occurred.”

She accused DA Bragg of vowing to prosecute Trump irrespective of the facts and bringing charges because of Trump’s political ties. Collins also predicted this case would lead to a “protracted appeals process.”

She’s not the only moderate pushing back. Even Mitch McConnell, often labeled a “RINO” by Trump and his supporters, issued a statement. It’s likely Trump himself was surprised by this support.

From Breitbart:
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) — who is no fan of former President Donald Trump — criticized the guilty verdict returned Thursday in the business records trial.

“These charges never should have been brought in the first place. I expect the conviction to be overturned on appeal,” he posted on X…

McConnell’s post dashed the hopes of Never Trumpers who had hoped that Republicans would turn on Trump once he was a “convicted felon.”

Despite not being a Trump ally, McConnell criticized the New York trial, saying it should never have been brought “in the first place.” He also predicted the conviction would be overturned on appeal.

Many believe the verdict will be nullified through the appeals process. Some claim it will reach the Supreme Court, which will dismiss it on constitutional grounds. However, for moderate Republicans to take such a stand demonstrates how disgusted many Americans are with this case.

Even Americans who believe in the rule of law are appalled by this development.
