White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon is urging the Pentagon to launch a comprehensive investigation into what he calls an “improper push” by Elon Musk to gain access to highly classified military briefings regarding U.S. war strategies on China.
During a wide-ranging interview with UnHerd, Bannon expressed alarm over Musk’s alleged attempts to infiltrate national security channels, questioning why a civilian with deep business ties to China would need to be briefed on sensitive military plans — especially those involving Taiwan.
“Why is Elon Musk, who has no security clearance, pushing for top-level Pentagon briefings? This must be fully investigated,” Bannon declared.

This new controversy follows reporting by The Atlantic, which claimed that a proposed Pentagon briefing for Musk was vetoed by then-President Donald Trump, who cited concerns about Musk’s connections with Chinese government entities.
National Security vs. Corporate Interests
Bannon, a vocal critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), asserted that Musk’s influence over government-related operations—especially through contracts via SpaceX and Tesla—poses a national security threat.
He warned:
“The government should use the Defense Production Act to temporarily remove Musk from positions requiring security clearance until a full review is completed.”
He added that Musk’s federal contracts should be scrutinized, given that a large portion of his companies’ revenues are fueled by U.S. government spending.

Internal Government Resistance
According to sources cited by The Daily Caller, Musk has previously clashed with senior White House officials and was blocked by Secretary of State Marco Rubio from influencing personnel decisions at the State Department.

“He has no legitimate reason to know U.S. military strategies concerning the Chinese Communist Party, especially on Taiwan,” Bannon emphasized.

In response to these accusations, Musk posted on X denying any involvement in national security overreach. He stated that he had no interest in Pentagon briefings and criticized recent legislation for being “rushed” and not properly debated.
The tech billionaire also recently stepped down from his special government role heading the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, a post he held briefly after Trump’s 2024 victory.
