Louisiana Senator John Kennedy didn’t hold back during a fiery segment on Fox News, where he offered a blunt and controversial opinion on Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—better known as AOC. The Republican senator not only claimed that AOC is now the de facto leader of the Democratic Party, but he also took aim at her intelligence and public speaking style with animalistic comparisons that have stirred national backlash.
Kennedy Says AOC Runs the Party, Not Schumer
Appearing on Sean Hannity’s show, Senator Kennedy stated, “I think Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez is the leader of the Democratic Party today.” While some still believe Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer holds that position, Kennedy dismissed that idea, citing Schumer’s plummeting 17% approval rating.

“Schumer may hold the title, but it’s AOC who’s calling the shots,” Kennedy said bluntly, referencing the growing influence of The Squad—a group of progressive lawmakers including AOC, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, and others pushing a more radical agenda within the Democratic Party.
AOC Launches ‘Anti-Oligarchy Tour’ with Bernie Sanders
While Kennedy ridiculed her, Ocasio-Cortez is actively leading an aggressive nationwide campaign labeled the “Anti-Oligarchy Tour” alongside Senator Bernie Sanders. The initiative is targeting Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and other high-profile figures seen as symbols of economic elitism.
The tour has been gaining media attention, especially among progressive voters, but Kennedy dismissed it as “ideologically empty”, claiming Democrats are obsessed with attacking Trump rather than offering constructive solutions.
“Billygoat Brain, Mockingbird Mouth”: Kennedy’s Sharp Words for AOC
In a soundbite that’s already gone viral, Kennedy described AOC in the harshest terms yet.
“She’s entitled to her opinions,” he said. “But God gave her a billygoat brain and a mockingbird mouth.”
The insult sparked instant outrage online, with critics accusing Kennedy of sexism and personal attacks instead of engaging in meaningful policy debate.
Kennedy went further, saying, “Democrats have no ideas. All they have is hatred for one man—President Trump—even when he’s right. That’s not healthy for them. That’s not healthy for America.”
Infighting and Division Rock the Democratic Party
The remarks come at a time of internal strife within the Democratic ranks. Progressive lawmakers like Rep. Glenn Ivey have openly criticized Senator Schumer for supporting a Republican-led spending bill that averted a government shutdown. Some on the left are already calling for new leadership heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
In the meantime, House Democrats are growing more combative. Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan has even introduced a resolution to impeach Trump, further escalating partisan tensions. And Rep. Jasmine Crockett recently went toe-to-toe with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene during a heated Oversight Committee hearing, adding fuel to what The New York Times called a “dark woke” tone in Congressional debates.

The Bigger Picture: A Shift in Political Power and Rhetoric
Kennedy’s explosive interview highlights a bigger transformation happening in Washington: progressive Democrats, led by outspoken figures like AOC, are shaping party direction, while establishment leaders like Schumer lose influence.
As we approach the 2024 general election, and with the 2026 midterms on the horizon, it’s clear that the battle for the soul of the Democratic Party is being fought in public—sometimes with insults louder than policies.
