Senator John Kennedy Clashes with Witness in Heated Hearing

Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana once again demonstrated his sharp questioning skills, taking aim at legal scholar Dr. Mary Anne Franks during a recent Senate hearing. Known for his witty and direct approach, Kennedy confronted Franks over her past statements on social media and in legal writings, questioning her objectivity in legal matters.

Kennedy Presses Franks on Bias and Supreme Court Opinions

The exchange began when Kennedy challenged Franks’ claim that the Biden administration had not pressured private companies to censor speech, while she accused the Trump administration of doing so.

“Do you think perhaps you’re allowing your personal political beliefs to affect your objectivity here?” Kennedy asked, setting the stage for a tense exchange.

Franks firmly denied the accusation, asserting that her views were based on legal precedent rather than personal bias. However, Kennedy was prepared with a series of quotes from her own work, putting her statements under scrutiny.

Kennedy Exposes Controversial Statements from Franks

Referring to a December 2023 law review article, Kennedy read aloud a passage in which Franks claimed the Supreme Court had weaponized the Constitution in favor of racial patriarchy.

“Did you say, ‘Taken together, these two cases demonstrate that the Supreme Court has embraced the use of the Constitution as a tool of racial patriarchy’?” Kennedy asked.

Franks confirmed she had, prompting Kennedy to move to another controversial excerpt.

“You also stated, ‘By simultaneously expanding white men’s right to kill and constricting women’s right not to die, this Supreme Court has turned the Constitution into a homicide pact.’ Did you write that?”

Again, Franks acknowledged the statement, her tone laced with sarcasm as she thanked Kennedy for reading her work aloud.

Senator Highlights Franks’ Past Social Media Comments

Shifting the discussion, Kennedy brought up past social media posts, questioning whether they revealed deep-seated political bias.

“On November 7, 2024, you tweeted: ‘The majority of Americans hate women more than they love anything, including democracy.’ Did I read that correctly?” Kennedy pressed.

Franks attempted to deflect, arguing the tweet was irrelevant to the hearing. However, Kennedy persisted, emphasizing the contradiction between her claims of impartiality and the highly charged nature of her remarks.

In another instance, Kennedy highlighted a 2022 tweet in which Franks asserted that the conservative Supreme Court’s stance on abortion rights and gun ownership was rooted in white male supremacy.

Kennedy’s Closing Remarks Leave an Impact

As the exchange drew to a close, Kennedy circled back to his initial argument.

“But your political beliefs don’t impact your feelings about President Biden or President Trump?” he asked.

“I don’t have feelings about either of them,” Franks responded, growing visibly frustrated.

Kennedy ended with a pointed remark: “It seems to me like your favorite feeling is anger.”

The hearing concluded with Kennedy’s final challenge to Franks’ credibility, leaving many in attendance questioning the objectivity of legal experts shaping public policy.
