In a controversial move, Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) has placed an indefinite hold on President Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C. This decision has sparked political tension as the role is critical in handling federal cases in the nation’s capital.
Schiff Moves to Block Ed Martin’s Confirmation
On Tuesday, Schiff announced that he would block the nomination of Ed Martin, a Trump-backed candidate currently serving as the acting U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C. The decision comes amid claims that Martin has abused his position by allegedly targeting political opponents and undermining free speech.
“I’m placing a hold on President Trump’s nominee for U.S. Attorney in D.C.,” Schiff posted on X (formerly Twitter). “For the past few weeks, Ed Martin has been a one-man wrecking ball. Threatening opponents, firing public servants, and using his office to chill free speech. His nomination must be blocked.”
Schiff’s move means the Senate must now use additional floor time to override the hold, significantly delaying or possibly derailing Martin’s confirmation process.

Schiff Accuses Martin of Misusing Authority
In a statement, Schiff claimed Martin’s appointment would further erode the firewall between the White House and the Justice Department.
“For the past nine weeks, Ed Martin has consistently undermined the independence of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C. He has openly threatened political opponents, dismissed charges against allies, and weaponized his office to stifle dissent,” Schiff said. “Confirming him would be a grave mistake that every Senator would come to regret.”
Martin’s Ties to Trump and His Controversial Tenure
Martin, a longtime Trump ally, has been at the center of several political battles since assuming the acting role. In February, he made headlines after sharing a letter with Elon Musk, vowing to prosecute individuals who threatened him and his department’s employees. The letter stated that his office would pursue offenders “to the end of the earth to hold them accountable.”
This stance has led to sharp criticism from Democrats, who argue that Martin is Trump’s tool for politicizing the Justice Department. Schiff reinforced this sentiment by stating:
“No one embodies Donald Trump’s personal weaponization of the Justice Department more than Ed Martin. He is unfit to serve as a lawyer, let alone hold a position with such power and influence.”
Schiff Praises Senate Allies in Anti-Trump Push
Schiff also commended Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) for his prolonged opposition to Trump’s judicial appointments. Booker’s marathon 25-hour speech against Trump’s legal policies was highlighted as a key moment of resistance. Schiff even joined Booker’s filibuster-style protest, doubling down on efforts to block Trump’s influence over the judiciary.

What’s Next for Martin’s Nomination?
With Schiff’s hold in place, Martin’s confirmation process is now in limbo. The Senate must decide whether to expend valuable legislative time to push the nomination forward or concede to Schiff’s demands. Meanwhile, the political battle over Trump’s influence on the justice system is far from over.
