Newsom Explodes Over Trump’s National Guard Invasion — Says Federal Takeover Will ‘Erode Trust’ in California

Tensions between federal and state leadership have reached a boiling point after President Donald Trump ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles following a series of violent riots linked to immigration enforcement operations.

But California’s top Democrat, Governor Gavin Newsom, is not holding back—accusing Trump of escalating the situation and bypassing state authority.

Over the weekend, immigration-related protests turned violent in Los Angeles after ICE agents attempted high-profile raids on suspected undocumented immigrants. The chaos quickly escalated into citywide unrest, prompting the Trump administration to invoke Title 10 and mobilize federal military forces.

“This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust,” Newsom warned in a statement posted to X, adding that “the Guard has been admirably serving LA throughout recovery.”

Newsom’s pushback comes as Trump declared his intent to override California’s command over the National Guard, citing a lack of local enforcement.

“If Governor Gavin Newscum and Mayor Karen Bass can’t do their jobs… then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem,” Trump posted on X, directly accusing state leaders of allowing “riots and looters” to take control.

According to Politico, Trump signed a presidential memorandum that activates 2,000 National Guard troops under federal command, signaling the White House’s willingness to take direct action in what it called a “lawless situation.”

Newsom Calls Federal Action “Purposefully Inflammatory”

The California Governor insists the decision was made without state consultation, stating:

“LA authorities are able to access law enforcement assistance at a moment’s notice… There is currently no unmet need.”

Newsom labeled the federal move “purposefully inflammatory”, accusing the Trump administration of undermining local leadership and ignoring the Guard’s existing role in community recovery efforts.

The controversial deployment highlights a deepening political divide between the federal government and Democratic state leaders. Many see the move as part of Trump’s broader effort to reassert federal power over states resisting his immigration agenda.

What’s Really at Stake?

  • State vs. Federal authority: Trump’s use of Title 10 bypasses state governors’ consent, which could set a precedent for future federal interventions.
  • Immigration enforcement tensions: The riots stemmed from confrontations between ICE agents and pro-immigrant demonstrators, intensifying nationwide debates about immigration reform.
  • 2024 Election optics: Critics argue that Trump’s decisive military response is part of a law-and-order strategy ahead of his expected campaign, positioning himself as the one who can “restore order.”

Local Leadership Pushes Back

Mayor Karen Bass and other local leaders echoed Newsom’s frustration, stating that Los Angeles has sufficient resources to manage unrest without federal interference.

Despite that, the National Guard has already begun arriving in Los Angeles County, with armored vehicles spotted near sensitive federal facilities and immigration offices.
