In a fiery appearance on MSNBC’s “Alex Witt Reports,” Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) stirred controversy with her call for the Democratic Party to abandon its reliance on “geriatric leadership” and embrace a new, dynamic approach to governance.
Crockett, known for her unapologetic style and divisive rhetoric, argued that the party’s leadership choices prioritize “status” over competence, sending the wrong message to voters.
A Call for Change in Democratic Ranks
During her Saturday interview, Crockett addressed the recent election of Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. Connolly, 74 and a cancer survivor, was chosen over younger contenders, including the ambitious Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who reportedly vied for the position.
“Saying this doesn’t imply that Connolly isn’t qualified,” Crockett said, “but this is what we see out of the Democratic Party. I think America is looking at us and saying, ‘Wait a minute, you lost the election, you lost Senate seats, and now you’re sticking to the same old playbook.’”
She added, “We need to show the American people that we’re willing to shake things up if it means moving this country forward.”

Pelosi’s Influence and Party Politics
Insiders suggest that Connolly’s appointment was aided by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who reportedly worked behind the scenes to whip votes against Ocasio-Cortez. The move highlights ongoing tensions within the Democratic Party between its established leadership and younger, progressive members.
Crockett’s comments underscore growing frustration among younger Democrats who feel sidelined by a party unwilling to evolve.
Sharp Words for Trump and Ukraine Policy
True to her outspoken nature, Crockett didn’t hold back when discussing President-elect Donald J. Trump. She accused him of being out of touch and perpetuated claims of his alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a narrative often criticized as baseless by political analysts.
“He’s completely off the mark,” Crockett claimed, adding that Trump needs to be addressed in an “elementary” way. Her remarks, delivered in a style some critics have labeled as inflammatory, further cement her reputation as one of Congress’s most polarizing figures.
A Rising Star or a Divisive Figure?
Crockett has become a frequent guest on left-leaning media, which appears eager to position her as a rising star within the party. However, her blunt rhetoric and controversial antics have drawn comparisons to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, leading some to dub her a “less polished AOC.”
Critics argue that Crockett’s approach alienates moderate voters, with one political analyst calling her “one of the most divisive voices in Congress.”

What This Means for the Democratic Party
Crockett’s remarks highlight a broader issue within the Democratic Party: a generational divide that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. With voters signaling a desire for fresh faces and innovative ideas, the party faces mounting pressure to adapt or risk further losses in key elections.
