Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is once again on a mission to rewrite U.S. history, this time teaming up with Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) to push for the repeal of a law signed over 200 years ago by President John Adams.
At the center of the controversy is the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, one of the four Alien and Sedition Acts, which has been in place since the country’s early days. The law was recently invoked by former President Donald Trump as part of his plan to crack down on illegal immigration and threats to national security.
But Omar and Hirono argue that the legislation is outdated and un-American, calling its continued existence a “moral stain” on the country.

Omar Calls for the ‘Neighbors Not Enemies’ Act to Overturn Historic Law
During a press conference, Omar announced her renewed efforts to push the “Neighbors Not Enemies Act”, which aims to repeal the Alien Enemies Act altogether.
“This law has no place in a modern democracy,” Omar declared. “It is a relic of the past, and using it to target immigrants is nothing short of unjust.”
She went on to say that Trump’s use of the law was politically motivated and was part of a larger plan to scapegoat immigrant communities.
Hirono, standing in support of the repeal, echoed Omar’s concerns:
“We must ensure that America remains a beacon of hope—not a nation that clings to outdated laws to justify discrimination.”
Trump and Conservatives Fire Back
Not surprisingly, Trump supporters and conservatives were quick to push back against the Democrats’ latest move, arguing that the Alien Enemies Act serves a critical national security function—especially in an era of global threats and illegal border crossings.
“This law has been in place for centuries for a reason,” said a GOP strategist. “It protects Americans from foreign threats in times of war. Why would anyone want to weaken our national security?”
Others noted the historical significance of the law, emphasizing that past presidents—including Franklin D. Roosevelt—have invoked it during wartime to protect the nation.

The Political Battle Over Immigration Heats Up
With immigration policy emerging as one of the top issues of the 2024 election, Omar and Hirono’s push to repeal the Alien Enemies Act comes at a critical moment.
